An elected Dutton Coalition Government will commit $150,000 to the 80 year celebration of Victory in the Pacific in Townsville.
On 15 August 1945, Japan surrendered to the Allied forces, officially ending the Second World War in the Pacific.
Victory in the Pacific 80 year celebrations (VP80) will be held in Townsville across a long weekend between August 14-17. This event will continue Townsville’s long tradition of hosting celebrations; in 1995 (VP50), 2005 (VP60) and 2015 (VP70).
The weekend will bring together veterans from World War II, members of the 5th United States Air Force and Australian Defence personnel.
It will be an important opportunity for the community to learn, commemorate and honour the one million Australians who served in the Second World War, as well as the 39,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice for Australia.
Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Peter Dutton MP said this is part of the Coalition’s commitment to honour the men and women who have served our nation.
“This Anzac Day, we especially feel the weight of history as we mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War. We express our gratitude to the one million Australians who served with great honour, and we honour the 39,000 Australians who gave their lives.
“They experienced the horror of war to restore peace, and as the custodians of that peace, it’s our duty to remember them. Lest we forget.”
Federal Member for Herbert, Mr Phillip Thompson OAM, highlighted the importance of honouring the sacrifices made and commemorating the significance of this milestone.
“The VP80 commemorations are an opportunity to remember and pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of our World War II veterans, who fought for the freedom we cherish today. Victory in the Pacific was a turning point that brought peace to Australia, and we must ensure the legacy of those who served, lives on through this historic commemoration.”
The Coalition’s commitment will match contributions from the Townsville City Council and the Queensland Government, ensuring the success of VP80.
