When can I start saving 25 cents per litre of fuel?
We will act to deliver immediate fuel tax relief to Australians.
A Dutton Coalition Government will, on the first day of the new Parliament, introduce laws to halve fuel tax, saving Australian motorists 25 cents per litre.
We will work to ensure Parliament passes the legislation quickly.
Motorists can expect to see these savings passed through to the bowser within 2 weeks of the legislation passing.
How much will I save?
A household with two cars will save around $1,500 a year under our plan.
How long will the savings apply?
We understand Australians need immediate relief from Labor’s home-grown cost of living crisis.
That is why we will introduce legislation to halve the fuel tax, saving you 25 cents per litre, on the first day that Parliament resumes.
The cut will apply for a year so we can deliver immediate and targeted support to households and small businesses, while we implement our plan to get Australia back on track, with a strong economy, low inflation, cheaper energy and affordable homes.
Who will benefit?
All road users who pay fuel tax will benefit.
This means you save every time you fill up your tank with unleaded or diesel, making it cheaper to drive your kids to school, to drive to work, or to visit friends and family.
It will also be cheaper for small businesses to deliver goods to customers and for tradies, and other sole traders to get around and travel to different sites.
Why are you doing this?
Under Labor, Australians have experienced the largest fall in living standards on record. In fact, we’ve endured the biggest drop in real disposable incomes of any developed country in the world.
Reversing Labor’s home-grown cost of living crisis will take time. But we know Australians need real relief, right now.

Will it apply to diesel fuel?
The 25 cent per litre cut to fuel tax will apply to all fuels (except for aviation fuel).
This includes diesel, standard unleaded, and premium unleaded.
Won’t it push up inflation?
No. The Liberals’ 25 cent per litre cut to fuel tax will detract an estimated 0.25 to 0.5 per cent from growth in the Consumer Price Index.
How will you ensure the fuel tax cut is passed on to consumers and small businesses?
The competition watchdog will monitor retailers to make sure these savings are passed on in full.
When the Coalition cut the fuel tax in 2022, the ACCC confirmed that petrol and diesel prices had fallen significantly after the cut was legislated.
